Is Google Code Readying Git Support?
Update (15th July 2011): Google Code Git support is now live!
Update (1st May 2011): This post continues to get quite a lot of traffic from people searching "Google Code git". Sadly, it looks like I was a little off the mark, but there's good news... I've seen the light... Mercurial is better! ;) Also, I've started using Bitbucket for my code hosting instead of Google Code.
It looks like Google Code could be working on adding Git support (at last)! I've been following the native Git support issue in the issue tracker and some interesting comments have appeared today:
- (8) sussman: Tell you what... as soon as git can do HTTP reasonably, let us know, and we can look into the issue of git on googlecode. :-)
- (12) rickvug: Git over HTTP is now more efficient as of version 1.6.6. For more information see http://progit.org/2010/03/04/smart-http.html. I guess this is now something to look into? :)
- (13) sussman: We're very aware of this, since it was a googler who wrote the new HTTP protocol. :-)
The fact that Google are "very aware" (not just aware, but very aware!) and one of their own staff has had a hand in this, I wouldn't be at all surprised if Git support showed up soon.
Watch this space! (or, the issue tracker!)
